I’ve recently been binging on a new podcast favorite, GirlBoss Radio, hosted by founder of Nasty Gal, Sophia Amoruso. The podcast features fascinating interviews with women of all backgrounds who have established success on their own terms. Most recently, I listened to the episode featuring Laura Wasser, a prominent divorce attorney in California. Laura’s take on divorce, marriage, and relationships was compelling, especially considering her experience of being a divorce attorney in LA for the past twenty years, and by being a divorcée herself. She discussed some of the basic principles of a well-functioning relationship, some of which are pretty simple and succinct, and can be applied by anyone:
Respect your partner
We’d all like to think we respect our significant other, but do we truly? Laura said that “sometimes we tend to be nicer to strangers than we are to the people we wake up next to every morning.” While we should undoubtedly be respecting our partners, often times it can become difficult, especially if there is any unresolved resentment or tension in the relationship. which brings us to the next point…
Strive for clear communication
Feelings, schedules, goals, and expectations – learn to communicate about all of it. Laura says that couples often drift apart because of a lack of communication. This happens more easily than we think, and Laura really emphasizes being adamant with talking things through and being on the same page with your partner.
Carve out time for one another
We’re all busy. We’re all tired. We all have excuses. But everyone has the same 24 hours in a day. Make time for your significant other. Whether it’s planning a date night once a week, planning a vacation, or spending an hour of quality time together each night, prioritize hanging out with your partner. Do your best to avoid being lazy, and make the effort to give some time to your partner.
While I’m no expert in love and relationships myself, I think everyone can learn a thing or two from Laura just by listening to this podcast episode. It’s always helpful to hear about the experiences and lessons had by others, especially when it comes to treating the most important person in our life.
