It seems skincare is all the rage right now amongst women of all age groups, with buzzwords like serums and retinol all around us. Thanks to beauty bloggers, YouTube vloggers, Instagram influencers, and of course, Sephora, women are becoming obsessed with taking proper care of their skin, and for good reason. On top of all the things women have to worry about – (our appearance, our brains, our careers, our relationships… you get the picture) skincare has become a priority, even more so than makeup trends. With all the different product types required for a healthy skincare routine (cleansers, toners, serums, eye creams, moisturizers, etc.) and the limitless options that different brands offer, it can be truly overwhelming to tackle the responsibility that is a proper skincare regime. As an indecisive and highly selective person, I know firsthand just how complicated it can be to find the right products and create the right skincare routine for you, so I’m sharing some tips that notably helped me along the way.
- Do Your Research
There is a lot of information out there on all things skincare – products, brands, trends, routines, and so on, and this could easily become overwhelming enough that you just give up before even starting. The trick is to pick out something specific that you want to focus on and do your research. For example, after reading lots of articles on various beauty blogs, I decided I wanted to give serums a try, so I began researching. A good place to start is with recommendations from trusted sources – including your favorite bloggers, customer reviews, and Sephora experts themselves. I spent weeks reading and running over to Sephora just to have them tell me about different products. (The Sephora workers taught me so much and are literally angels for dealing with my pickiness and indecisiveness.) Only after weeks of research was I ready to make a purchase, and the biggest reward was buying a product I knew would be the right choice – and it was!
- Sample Everything
I live by this philosophy – before I make any skincare or makeup purchase, I HAVE to try a sample. This is partly because my skin is very sensitive and I need to make sure the product doesn’t irritate my skin or cause an allergic reaction, but also because I am as indecisive as it gets. I cannot make a decision unless I try every option, consider all the pros and cons, overthink, and start the whole process again. This is why samples are a game changer for me. Once again, bless the Sephora staff for letting me try out samples of anything and everything I want before I actually purchase it. The process of sampling different products is worth it because in the end you know you are investing in a product you love and will work for you.
- Do What Works for You
This is probably the most important rule when it comes to skincare and your routine. Although the recommendations of your friends and beauty blogs can be helpful, it doesn’t mean they are necessarily right for you. We all know that different products work well for different skin types, which is why it is so crucial to do what works for you. This is where sampling products comes in handy and ultimately leads you to make a well informed decision about your purchase. The same goes for skincare routines – just because you read that a 10-step skincare routine does the trick for your favorite blogger, maybe you don’t have time for that, or maybe your skin just doesn’t need it. Ultimately, you know what works for you and what doesn’t, so make sure to do what’s best for you.
The skincare buzz really is a positive thing, as it encourages women to take better care of their skin. Although there is a lot of information and products out there, it doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Remember to follow these simple guidelines and you’ll quickly master what works best for you and your skin.
